Residency Requirement

Because living on campus provides distinct advantages and optimum learning environments for students, the Trustees of Indiana University approved a policy that requires all undergraduate first-year students (with some exceptions) to live in the residence halls or on-campus apartments.

The exemption process is only for newly admitted students who do not have an active housing contract.

Exemptions From First Year On-Campus

Exemptions from the residency requirement will be considered as follows: Students in the following categories may be granted an exemption from the residency requirement. A formal request for exemption is mandatory. Please follow the process for submitting an exemption under Submitting an Exemption Request.

1First-time, first year students whose actual residence is with a parent or legal guardian. The residence must be within a 25 mile radius of Bloomington. Owning or purchasing real estate within 25 miles of Bloomington does not qualify for a request for exemption.
1Transfer students entering their second semester of study having completed 15 credit hours or more.
1Part-time students enrolled in less than 12 credit hours each semester.
1Students who will be 21 years of age prior to the start of their first semester at IU Bloomington.
1Students who are married and/or have children or who qualify under the university guidelines for a domestic partnership.
1Students pledging a fraternity and who will reside in a chapter house. Proof of residency in the fraternity is required.

In addition to the above categories, requests for exemptions from this policy will be considered for special circumstances (e.g. medical, cultural, financial) on a case by case basis.

Deadline Information: Requests must be submitted online by June 1, 2013 for students beginning fall semester 2013. To expedite the processing of your request, please ensure that all required supporting documentation is submitted when requested.
