Welcome home!
Move-in is a day full of excitement and bittersweet emotions for both students and families. IU Housing is here to help, and we've included everything you need to know to make your experience a success. It will be busy on campus and around town (downtown Bloomington, College Mall, etc.).
Take a few minutes to review the information and tips below so you come to campus feeling confident and prepared.
Know before you go!
- Know what to pack and what not to pack.
- Helpful external resources:
- Renters Insurance – It is advisable to protect personal belongings in case of flood, fire, theft, or other unexpected events that may occur in or around university housing. As our resident, you're eligible to purchase coverage through GradGuard's student renters insurance program.
- Ship-to-school before you arrive. Students can utilize our Ship-to-school partner Guys and Dollies immediately since items are stored off-site and arranged to be brought to student rooms once they have moved in. Residence centers will begin accepting packages for residents no earlier than Monday, August 10. Students must have their room assignment before being able to ship items since the exact building address is required.
- Bed lofting and rentals – Bedloft offers bed lofting configurations, fridge & microwave rentals, and futon purchases.
- Set up your digital CrimsonCard and download it to your phone’s wallet. This will make your check-in go much more smoothly.
- Know your move-in date and time window. You can always check the Housing Portal to confirm.
- Residence Hall Center Desks will not accept or distribute packages on Tuesday, August 18 or Wednesday, August 19, due to Grand Move-In days. If you need something when you arrive on one of those two days and did not utilize Ship-to-school, you are better off bringing it with you.
- Residents with cars: If residents have a car on campus, you will need to move it to Memorial Stadium from Sunday, August 16 through Wednesday, August 19, so residents checking in have more parking spaces available for their move-in.
Grand Move-In: Aug. 18 & 19
First stop: Check in at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall
Enter check in from the Indiana 45/46 Bypass at Gate 11, Purple Lot.
Address: 1001 E. 17th Street, Bloomington, IN. Park in either the Green or Orange parking lot.
Students will need their CrimsonCard (school ID) set up on their mobile device to check in. Bring it into Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall with you.
- Temporary cards will be issued for students who are unable to access their CrimsonCard through their phone.
Only students may check in (parents, guardians, or other people may not check in on the student's behalf).
Students will receive their unload-and-go parking pass at check-in. Place this on your vehicle’s dashboard.
Students will proceed to their residence hall after they are checked in.
Students arriving by shuttle or ride shares are able to leave their belongings in a luggage storage area while they complete check-in at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall.
Incoming students should arrive and move in by the evening of Wednesday, August 19, to ensure they attend their first-floor meeting in their residence center.
Second stop: Your residence hall
- Residence Hall addresses can be found on their individual Residence Center web pages.
- Go to your building. You should see “Unload-and-go" lawn signs at designated move-in locations at your residence hall. Directions for these each individual's residence center's location is listed below.
- Unload-and-Go
- To keep move-in efficient, we need all students to unload their vehicles as quickly as possible (ideally in 15-20 minutes) and then have the driver of the vehicle move it to one of the designated parking lots/garages.
- Have one member of your party stay with your vehicle so it can be moved as soon as your vehicle is unloaded to allow fellow Hoosiers to move in.
Unload and go areas:
- 10th Street parking lot
- Sunrise Drive (one way south for move in from 10th Street.
Go to the Ashton Dreiser center desk to pick up your room key.
Unload and go area: From centralized check-in, proceed to Blue Lot at gate 14.
- Golf carts will be available in the blue lot to assist you on Tuesday, August 18 and Wednesday, August 19 from 8 a.m.–5 p.m.
- The circle drive will be closed during centralized check (August 18–19) so golf carts can bring items to the building.
Unload and go areas: Circle Drive and lower dock area
Residents and families should use the curb and dock area near the apartment community to unload belongings and move them into the apartment, then move their vehicle to an appropriate parking area before unpacking and setting up their space.
Unload and go areas: The streets immediately around Collins.
Unload and go area: Park in the parking lot south of Eigenmann
- Staff with golf carts will be available to assist you.
- The circle drive will be closed during centralized check-in so we can run golf carts.
Unload and go area: You can unload on the Forest circle drive, or in the parking lot to the east and west of Forest.
Unload and go areas:
- For Foster Martin, Magee, and Jenkinson residents: Turn left onto N Foster Drive and park on the curb on in parking spaces to unload.
- For Harper and Shea Residents: Turn onto the Foster Circle Drive off Fee Lane and park on the right and unload your vehicle.
There is also additional unloading space in the parking lot directly behind Foster Harper.
Unload and go area: You can park on Fee Lane, or the 13th Street parking lot.
- Staff with golf carts will be available to assist you.
- The circle drive will be closed during centralized check in
- Additional unloading space is located in the tailgate lot grass area.
Unload and go areas:
Beck and Landes Residents:
- Turn on Jones Avenue
- Proceed to the fire lane on the left where you can unload your vehicle.
Clark and Curry Residents:
- Turn on the drive leading to East Parking Garage
- Proceed to the fire drive on the right where you may unload your vehicle.
Unload and go area: Unload your vehicle near Spruce. Park on the side of Jones Avenue or the parking lot east of Forest.
Residents can also go to the East parking garage behind Read and staff with golf carts will help bring items to your building.
Unload and go area: To unload, turn on Sunrise Drive, or park in 10th Street lot.
Unload and go areas: North and east curb and parking spaces behind Willkie.
Residents and families should use the curb and dock area near the apartment community to unload belongings and move them into the apartment, then move their vehicle to an appropriate parking area before unpacking and setting up their space.
Unload and go areas: West entry drive curb and north dock area
Residents and families should use the curb and dock area near the apartment community to unload belongings and move them into the apartment, then move their vehicle to an appropriate parking area before unpacking and setting up their space.
Unload and go area: Park in the parking lot south of Eigenmann
Staff with golf carts will be available to assist you.
Unload and go area: East parking spaces
Residents and families should use the curb and dock area near the apartment community to unload belongings and move them into the apartment, then move their vehicle to an appropriate parking area before unpacking and setting up their space.
Unload and go area: Pull into the 13th Street parking lot to the south of McNutt Staff with golf carts will be available to assist you.
- You can also turn on N. Walnut Grove and unload on the side of the road.
- Walnut Grove will be one way south during move in.
- Additional unloading space is located in the tailgate lot grass area west of N. Walnut Grove
Unload and go area: Turn into the drive in front of Memorial Hall
Unload and go area: Turn into your assigned building fire lane to unload on the right.
There is a parking lot for additional unloading space directly behind Willkie.
Unload and go areas:
A, B, C, & D Residents:
- From 7th St., turn north on Campbell Drive to unload your belongings. Campbell Drive is one-way and runs just east of Wright between 7th and 10th Streets.
- Additional unloading is located in the 10th Street parking lot.
E, F, & G Residents:
- From Eagleson, turn into the Wright west drive.
- Pull to the right curb to unload.
- Additional unloading is located in the 10th Street parking lot.
Parking (after your vehicle is unloaded)
Free parking for families/supporters is available:
- During the day until 6 p.m.
- Grass lot east of Foster Quad, off Foster Drive
- Tailgate lot west of Walnut Grove Center, south of the DeVault Alumni Center
- East Parking Garage (East side of campus, on Eagleson Ave., north of Read Hall)
- Atwater Parking Garage (South side of campus, corner of Atwater Ave. and Woodlawn Ave.)
- During the day and overnight
- Memorial Stadium parking lots: White (west of stadium) and Purple (north of stadium)

- Do not park in spaces labeled EMP, EMS, CH, SV, or any 24-hour restricted parking spaces.
Shuttles
- After a family member/supporter parks the car, they can take a free shuttle or walk back to their student’s residence hall.
- Shuttles are running in a loop around campus to help family members/supporters return to their student’s residence hall and then back to their car. View the shuttle route map.
Move-in FAQs
A move-in appointment is the date and time you select in the move-in portal. This is the date and time you should plan to arrive on campus and check in.
You can sign up for a move-in appointment once you have your official housing assignment.
You are able to make changes to the date and time you selected by going back into the move-in portal.
No, only those that are part of a sponsored group are able to move in early.
Yes, if you are approved to move in early, you will receive a daily fee based on the rate category of your housing assignment. This will be charged from the day you check in until the contract starts.
Yes, just ensure you know the proper check-in location before arriving at your residence hall.
We suggest students bring 2–3 friends or family members to assist with the move-in process.
All maintenance trouble will need to be submitted via the maintenance request form. If the request is an emergency, speak to the center desk of your building after submitting the ticket.
Room changes can only be made by setting up an appointment with the residence life coordinator at the center desk of your assigned building. However, room changes will be based on availability and the process would not start until a minimum of 3 weeks after move in.
You will move into your original housing assignment when you arrive to campus.
No, all university-provided furniture must stay in the space. If any pieces are missing upon arrival, you should report this to your center desk to ensure you are not charged at the end of the year for the missing furniture.
